Gowanus Lighting Project
POWERED BY
We are advocates for a considered night-time experience within the contemporary and future urban landscape. Led by Gowanus-based lighting design practice Sighte Studio, we strive to initiate discourse on electric light, and its ability to support and enhance vibrant, functional, and safe urban neighborhoods.
Our research and design work in Gowanus engages the community, stakeholders, developers, and city agencies to ensure that light is included in the re-zoning and development of our neighborhood.
Research + Design
The Gowanus Lighting Atlas is a comprehensive survey of the existing electric lighting conditions throughout the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. Expanding on typical site analysis methodologies, we collected quantitative and qualitative data sets through mapping, measuring, photographing, observing, and interviewing inhabitants.
Neighborhood
Located in Brooklyn, NY, Gowanus is a historically industrial neighborhood in a low-lying area of South Brooklyn. Its industrial past led to significant pollution of its namesake canal. Today the neighborhood is undergoing a re-zoning effort as well as gentrification.
